Kuku Yalanji and Kaanju Nation groups, GBRF Crown of Thorns Starfish and Reef Restoration and Adaptation Science Traditional Owner Technical Working Group Member

Dawn Harrigan is a proud Aboriginal Woman who descends from the Kuku Yalanji and Kaanju nations. Her ancestral roots lie in the Kuku Yalanji region, encompassing the area from the southern banks of the Annan River to the northern shores of the Mowbray River, known as Kubbiddi Warra.

Throughout her professional journey, Dawn has had the privilege of working with diverse Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations across Queensland. This extensive experience has endowed her with a profound understanding of Traditional Owner governance structures and their aspirations. Currently, she is a part of the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation. Moreover, she plays a vital role in reviewing the Indigenous Protected Area Plans (IPA) in collaboration with Traditional Owners and Elders, ensuring their invaluable insights shape strategies. 

Dawn is an important member of the COTS Control Program and Reef Restoration and Adaptation Science Traditional Owner Technical Working Group, closely collaborating with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. Throughout her journey, Dawn has had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed Elders and senior personnel across Cape York Peninsula, deepening her understanding and appreciation of the region's rich cultural heritage.

From 2006 to 2015, she served as an Indigenous Health Worker at the Wujal Wujal Primary Health Care Centre. Since 2016, she has been involved in various roles at the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council. Driven by her passion for preserving and promoting Indigenous culture, coupled with her hands-on experience, Dawn is dedicated to making a positive impact within her community and beyond.
